Thirsty Fountain Q&A!

1. What has been the biggest challenge for you thus far, in regards to getting your project off the ground?

Our biggest challenge was finding the materials and putting them together. Considering we are inventing this from scratch, it was difficult to hunt down materials and make them work together successfully. In addition, we ARE working with water, which always finds a way to seep through cracks you didn’t think existed so it took some trials and errors to make the project flawless.

2. What type of impact do you feel your project has made on your team as well as other students in your school?

Our project has opened our eyes to the endless amount of small things you can do that have such a big outcome. It has forced us to think way outside of the box and has inspired us to continue to think of other things we can do to make our school and world, a greener place. The Thirsty Fountain also had a big impact on the students/faculty at our school. At first they were confused and not very optimistic saying “Oh are they trying to save water or something?” but once the project was complete it was like a new student body. Nobody could believe how quickly our containers filled up as the average school day went on. In the end, the impact our project is everything we could have asked for and more.

3. In one sentence, describe what drives you to advocate a greener way of living.

We advocate a greener way of living because our planet is not eternal, our resources are finite, and we want people to notice this before it’s too late, we don’t want our environment get to the point where we HAVE to change, we want everyone to do it now, while we still WANT to change.

4. If you could go back, is there anything you would do differently?

The thing we would have done differently would be to have started earlier. We spent way too much time finding the materials and making the Thirsty Fountain, not aware of the fact that spring break just so happened to be the last week of the competition. If we started earlier we would have had more time to use the water for other uses such as paint water, cleaning, etc. and would have gotten the opportunity to document that as well.

5. Describe your team in three words.

Jubilant, diligent, and innovative.

6. What have you learned most from this experience?

At first we had no idea the scale of how much water we would conserve, even our team who was entirely aware of the problem, (because we did small experiments where we collected water) was very surprised to witness 2 and a half gallon containers being taken out 2-3 times in one day. Right then we noticed something huge, that we can make such a big difference, with such small changes.

7.Anything else you would like to tell us?

We would like to say thank you for the opportunity to save gallons of fresh water when so many people on earth strive to get just a glass of it a day. Thank you for giving us the chance to bring the Thirsty Fountain to life and to make such a difference in our school. And most, importantly, thank you for believing that teenagers all over the United States can make a difference, because we can, and for that we cannot thank you enough.

Thirsty Fountain Complete!

After days of finding and putting together the pieces to our Thirsty Fountain, we have successfully completed our runoff water collector! The students are amazed as they go for a casual drink of water, realizing the water that usually goes down the drain is being compiled! Wait to see how the water is reused!

Phase 1: Awareness---Complete!

You can't miss the hanging water bottles when you go for a drink of water! We hope to make students more aware of the water wasted before we move on to the next step! Also, check out our QR reader on our thirsty fountain flyer! When you scan it with your phone it takes you immediately to our initial project proposal where students can learn more about our project.

Its shocking how much water we use everyday!
